“We want land, not handouts”–> The Tent Embassy

Between 1960 and 1970 Land Rights became more of an issue. Land Rights ask for the recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People and the impacts of land being taken during Colonisation. In 1972 a new loan system was announced by Prime Minister William McMahon’s government. This basically allowed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People a 50 year lease on the land. This led to the establishment of the Tent Embassy.
